John Hartford, born in New York City and raised in St. Louis, was a singer, songwriter, and TV performer. He wrote ‘‘Gentle on My Mind,’’ which has been recorded more than 300 times, most notably by Glen Campbell in 1967. He had a particular interest in riverboats and mountain fiddlers. He died in 2001.
