Thomas J. Allen, educated at the University of Maine, came to West Virginia in 1970 as a deer research biologist. His publications included ‘‘White-tailed Deer in West Virginia’’ and The Butterflies of West Virginia and Their Caterpillars. Also a wildlife artist, he designed the state license plate featuring the rose-breasted grosbeak. Allen died in 2010.
