John Rush Elkins, a Beckley native and emeritus professor of chemistry at Concord University, did American chestnut research on his property. He was a graduate of WVU Tech and WVU, where he earned a Ph.D. His family went back five generations in West Virginia on his father’s side and six on his mother’s side. He died in 2006.
