W. Russ McClain, a native West Virginian, has degrees in wildlife ecology, biology, and ornithology, working primarily in the Appalachian mountains. He has studied eastern screech-owls, songbirds, and salamanders. Formerly with the Nature Conservancy, he directs the Center for Sustainability Studies and teaches biology at Davis and Elkins College.
