Peter W. Roper, an Englishman and a chemist, had a lifelong interest in maps and mapmaking. After retiring as product development manager for a British cigarette manufacturer, he published a biography of Jedediah Hotchkiss, Stonewall Jackson’s cartographer. He died in 2002.
