This Adena birdstone, carved from granite, was uncovered in an Army Corps of Engineers dredging operation in the Big Sandy River in 1898. It probably dates between 500 BC and 1000 BC. Birdstones were attached to the end of an atl-atl (spear thrower) to balance the weight of the spear. This birdstone is part of the Pitt-Stark Collection at Huntington Museum of Art.
