Ferrell Friend from Clay County was educated at Commercial College in Charleston and the Navy School of Photography. He was a photographer and reporter at the Charleston Gazette for 22 years. His photographs have appeared in the New York Times, Newsweek, Saturday Evening Post, and in newspapers statewide. He died in 2009.
