Joseph Crosby Jefferds Jr., a Charleston native and president emeritus of the West Virginia Humanities Council, graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He served in the army during WWII before founding Jefferds Corporation, a distributor of industrial machinery. He died in 2005.
