Louis H. Manarin, who earned a B.A. from Western Maryland College and an M.A. and Ph.D. from Duke, was Virginia state archivist, 1970–95. He is the author or editor of several books on Virginia and North Carolina history of the Civil War era, including The Wartime Papers of R. E. Lee and Henrico County: Field of Honor.
